What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any situation that requires immediate professional attention to relieve severe pain, stop bleeding, or save a tooth. Common dental emergencies include:
- Severe toothache or dental pain that does not subside
- A knocked-out or displaced tooth
- A cracked, chipped or fractured tooth
- A lost filling, crown or other dental restoration
- Swelling or infection in the gums, jaw or face
- Injury to the soft tissues of the mouth, including the lips, tongue or cheeks
What to Do in a Dental Emergency
If you experience a dental emergency, stay calm and contact our office immediately. Here are some steps you can take before your appointment:
- Knocked-out tooth: Pick the tooth up by the crown, rinse gently without scrubbing, and try to place it back in the socket. If that is not possible, keep it moist in a glass of milk or saliva and get to our office as quickly as possible.
- Severe toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater and use dental floss to gently remove any food that may be trapped. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums.
- Broken or chipped tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek to reduce swelling.
- Lost filling or crown: If possible, save the restoration and bring it with you to your appointment. A small amount of dental cement or sugar-free gum can temporarily cover the area.

Preventing Dental Emergencies
While not all emergencies can be prevented, you can reduce your risk by:
- Wearing a mouthguard during sports and physical activities
- Avoiding chewing on ice, hard candy or other hard objects
- Keeping up with regular dental exams and cleanings
- Using scissors instead of your teeth to open packages
