What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last set of teeth to develop and typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. Most people have four wisdom teeth, one in each corner of the mouth. While some patients have enough room for their wisdom teeth to erupt normally, many do not, which can lead to a variety of dental problems if left untreated.

Why Wisdom Teeth May Need to Be Removed

Wisdom teeth often need to be extracted because they can cause or contribute to the following issues:

  • Impaction: The teeth become trapped beneath the gum line or in the jawbone, potentially causing pain and infection.
  • Crowding: Emerging wisdom teeth can push against neighboring teeth, causing misalignment.
  • Partial eruption: Teeth that only partially break through create an opening where bacteria can enter, leading to infection and gum disease.
  • Cysts or tumors: In rare cases, impacted wisdom teeth can lead to the development of cysts that may damage the jawbone and surrounding teeth.
  • Decay: Wisdom teeth at the back of the mouth are difficult to clean properly, making them more susceptible to cavities.

The Extraction Process

Before your procedure, Dr. Ken Cheng or Dr. Chan Chan will take X-rays to evaluate the position of your wisdom teeth and plan the best approach for removal. During the extraction, local anesthesia is used to ensure your comfort. For impacted teeth, a small incision in the gum tissue may be necessary to access and remove the tooth. The entire procedure is performed with care to minimize discomfort and promote a smooth recovery.

Recovery After Wisdom Teeth Removal

Most patients recover from wisdom teeth removal within a few days. To support your healing, we recommend:

  • Applying ice packs to the outside of the cheek to reduce swelling
  • Eating soft foods such as yogurt, applesauce and soup for the first few days
  • Avoiding straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing for at least 24 hours
  • Taking prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication as directed
  • Gently rinsing with warm saltwater after the first 24 hours
